I hope each of you is safe and well! I communicated via video last week but wanted to circle back and send a summary via e-mail.
Instruction in the Fall
The district is preparing to offer 100% online for parents that would prefer this due to concerns about COVID-19 kindergarten through 12th grade. We are also ready for potential small group instruction on rotating days(Plan A) or even potentially 100% face to face for families(Plan B). The district is waiting for additional guidance from the state before finalizing plan A/B. The district will offer 100% online options for families, no matter if we are required to implement plan A or B. Contact the appropriate office if you want to talk over options.
The MHSAA identified guidance for coaches during the past week to begin small group activities outside. The athletic director will meet with the coaches in the next week to discuss future activities.
Due to the economic shutdown of COVID-19, the state has estimated revenue shortfalls in the school aid fund(where schools receive their revenue from the state). The amount equates to a $700 deduction from the current school year(2019/20) funding. The proration will pose a significant challenge for all schools as our fiscal year ends on June 30th. The state has also warned for additional deductions in state aid for the 2020/21 school year. Alcona has implemented a hiring freeze and absorbed any staff that has retired or resigned until we know further information. The state has provided no timeline on additional information even though we wrap up our 19/20 budge on June 30th and are required to implement our 20/21 budget by July 1st. Schools across the state are navigating in the dark for the next few months until the legislature makes critical decisions.
- Absorption of a bus route.
- Ms. Tina Stern is now the agriscience paraprofessional. We do not plan to replace her vacant paraprofessional position.
- Mr. Rick Sedgwick has retired. Mr. Tim Campbell has replaced Mr. Sedgwick as a .5 special education teacher and will then teach the rest of his high school industrial arts/woodworking schedule.
- Ms. Brooke Green has been moved from art to 1st grade. No decision has been made on the second elementary special for students until we know more about the budget and learning options for the fall.
There are no easy decisions as we navigate uncertain waters. The district will be ready to support students no matter what the fall presents and have plans to be prepared for just about anything COVID-19 or the state requires of us. As always, feel free to let me know if you have questions or concerns.
