"A Mental Health Minute with Mrs. Marsh" When feeling depressed or anxious, exercise often seems like the last thing you want to do. BUT once you get moving it will make a HUGE difference. Regular exercise helps release feel-good endorphins, taking your mind off your worries, gaining confidence, and most of all- coping in a healthy way. Starting and sticking with an exercise routine or regular physical activity can be a challenge. I suggest starting with these steps: 1. What Physical Activities do you enjoy?? 2. Set realistic goals for yourself. 3. Think of Physical Activity as a tool to help you feel better, instead of a chore. 4. Get out there and get moving! Grab a friend or family member (using social distancing guidelines for now...).

Unconfirmed Exposure  The district has been informed that two adults that were on campus over the past week came in contact with Utah Jazz and Detroit Pistons players at Saturday's game.  It was announced that on Wednesday, two Jazz players tested positive for COVID-19.  According to local health officials and the CDC, the risk is very low for the spread of the disease from this type of contact.  I want to reinforce that there is not a confirmed case from the adults who attended the basketball game, nor are they showing symptoms.  The case is a sobering reminder as to how easy it is to come in contact with others who have traveled and unknowingly were exposed to the disease.  The district will be taking steps to demonstrate the seriousness of the school closure issued last night to protect students, families, and staff.  If there are updates regarding this situation, they will be passed along.

Note From the Superintendent As many of you heard, today we informed parents we moved the elementary holiday program from the evening to the school day. The primary reason is concerns about the safety of students and guaranteed participation for all students. It’s no easy task coordinating 300 students and 700(plus) adults to pick up their children. We attempted to work through the security concerns, but couldn’t didn’t feel comfortable enough to move forward this year. The delay in communication falls on me as we were attempting refine our procedures for the night, but never found a system in a foreign building to staff/students to make it work. I apologize for the confusion and late reschedule. Feel free to direct your frustration to my office at 989-736-6212 or oconnord@alconaschools.net. The hope is with a year to plan we can revisit the evening program, but I can’t make any promises at this point. We will stream the event on our district YouTube page live for people unable to attend and will share a link in the coming days. Please accept my apologizes for the late change. In Michigan, there are approximately 13,000 children in foster care. Right here in the Alcona/Iosco area we have over 90 kids in foster care and only 27 foster homes to care for these children. Foster Care identifies and places children in safe homes when they cannot remain with their families because of safety concerns. Foster families provide these children with the consistency and support they need to grow. What it Takes to be a Foster Parent? Foster children need caring individuals who can provide a safe and nurturing home. The primary goal during foster care is to reunite the child with his or her parents. This can take some time - we need caring adults who are willing to provide stability and safety for children in their care. For more information go to www.michigan.gov/hopeforahome or call 1-855-MICHKIDS.

The physics classes had a guest from Harvard come in last week to introduce the students to quantum physics. Elizabeth Himwich taught the students for a week about advanced physics topics and Peter Mapes took interested students on a flight at the airforce base. The students learned how to take off and land the plane as well as simulated zero gravity and 2G. This allowed the students to experience the science that they learned about in the classroom.
