Alcona’s environmental science students visited the North Point Sanctuary, north of Alpena, to learn about local terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Scholars collected water samples in an effort to monitor water acidification. Students were also educated about native plants present in the sanctuary and shook hands with a few trees. Lastly, they removed spotted knapweed and talked about invasive species prevention and reduction techniques.

Project RAW is a project-based learning initiative that aids in the restoration of wetland areas close to home. Students enrolled in the environmental science class (Mrs. Luce) participate in a two-part pollution study consisting of a) studying invasive species and implementing solutions for invasive spread and b) studying marine debris and implementing solutions for water pollution issues in our local waters. For this study, students are working closely with community partners. We are consulting closely with S. Alexander (harbor master, T. De’Augustino (MSU Extension), D. Moffatt (Thunder Bay NMS), M. Schwartz (NEMIGLSI), R. Williams, M. Khuri (Huron Pines), C. O’Brien and C. Sadler (TBNMS), and many more amazing local associates and are committed to integrating the place-based learning framework, as well as Great Lakes Literacy into our local studies. We are happy and honored to work in close cooperation with the Harrisville Harbor, which offers a site for field investigations and community outreach efforts in all things water pollution.
The class went on educational expeditions to the Harrisville Harbor and North Point as part of their research.
Please feel free to ask students about THEIR project and they will be happy to inform you about ways in which YOU can help achieve the goal of keeping our local wetlands clean and our natural resources abundant.
