Lots of traveling this week! Come see your Tigers on the road!

On Thursday, students of both environmental science classes visited the Harrisville Harbor to participate in a planning day for a rain garden. At the beginning of the school year, students isolated possible pollution issues at our local harbor, drafted a plan, wrote a grant, received funding, and are now in the process of implementing a garden. The objective of this project is to stop chemical pollutants as well as litter from flowing into our beautiful lake Huron, to mitigate invasive species spread, and to increase local biodiversity by selecting flowering plants that attract birds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
At the harbor, students took soil samples via percolation test, vertical soil profile, soil probe exercise, and ribbon test. They furthermore calculated the area of impermeable surfaces present at the site and figured out the slope to analyze potential runoff issues. At the end of the day, they staked out the plot for the garden, a 1037ft^2 area, and pinpointed native plants that will aid filtration as well as beautification of the harbor site. We are very proud of our young environmentalists and will post more updates as their project progresses.
Additional thanks to NEMIGLSI, US Fish and Wildlife, Huron Pines, and the Harrisville Harbor for their continued support of this project.
