If you’re near the District Office, take a moment to stop by our new historic display and enjoy a glimpse into Alcona’s past. The collection features a railroad spike from the tracks that once ran through the property, a School Directory from 1920-1921, and records of proceedings and minutes from school district meetings dating back to the 1920s. You’ll also find the Contingent Fund records of 1928, along with photographs of the old schoolhouse and a horse-drawn school bus. These artifacts offer a fascinating look at the early years of education in Alcona and serve as a reminder of the community’s strong roots and ongoing dedication to learning. We invite everyone to stop by and take a look at this piece of Alcona’s past. #alconaschools #tigerpride #history

Today, Ms. Cordes kicked off our Educational Development Plan (EDP) discussions with 6th graders. An EDP is each student’s personal roadmap for high school, outlining their goals and the steps needed to achieve them. Ms. Cordes shared her own career journey, the lessons she learned along the way, and how the expectation for students in her generation was simply to graduate, go to college, and start a career. Now, she’s encouraging students to think intentionally about their own future paths and the actions that can help them reach their goals; such as job shadowing, researching careers, and more. She also emphasized that college and trade school can complement each other, and that every student’s pathway is unique; there is no single “right” path. All students are actively planning their path to graduation and their future career, with 6th graders just beginning their journey.
Parents/guardians can share their career pathway with their 6th grader and how they decided on their profession. Did you have to volunteer and/or gain experience at a job before you could start your career? Was education or training required? Some follow up questions to ask your 6th grader from today’s presentation are: 1) What are some careers you are curious about? and 2) What are some things I can do to help you learn more about those careers?
Next class, 6th graders will begin exploring different careers! One of their favorite activities is being matched with potential careers based on their interests. By the end of the program, students will create a “future career” time capsule, which they will receive back at graduation. Career exploration for 7th and 8th graders will continue later this fall. #alconaschools #tigerpride #careerexploring
